Susan was a very bright child learning how to read and to write by the time that she was three years old. One of Susan Anthony’s early role-models had been a teacher in the group home school where her father taught her named Mary Perkins. Mary Perkins projected a progressive and independent image of women to Susan which instilled within Susan a belief in woman’s equality. Susan’s mother, Lucy, had also been a student in Daniel’s school before the pair fell-in-love and married by 1817. Lucy was a progressive minded woman who attended women’s rights conventions in the 1850’s although she shunned association with her husband Daniel’s Quaker friends throughout their married lives.

RAYNARD JACKSON OP-ED: The Browning of America

image

The stunning win of Scott Brown in the Massachusetts Senate race Tuesday has sent shock waves throughout the political world. But, as usual with tectonic shifts like this, everyone is totally misreading what happened.

Republicans have every reason to be crowing today and Democrats have every reason to be depressed. I would call what happened Tuesday night the “Browning” of America. The people of Massachusetts spoke with their votes that they are more interested in results, not party labels.

The problems both parties face is not with their bases, but with independent voters. There are more independent voters than there are Democrats or Republicans. In Massachusetts, 51% of the electorate is independent. The “Browning” effect is going to force both parties to come to the political center. That is the lesson from Tuesday vote. Any other spin is simply nonsense.

Time for TEA…Party that is. By: Leette Eaton- White

image

I believe innocent life should be defended at all costs and the guilty should be punished. I believe this country has the right to defend itself preemptively, and I believe for the most part we make an effort to do so as honorably as possible without compromising our safety, and while that may not always meet the standards of international laws it meets the standard of the Constitution and that’s golden by me. I believe the money we earn is ours, and only what is absolutely needed should go into taxes for social programs that we know work or are incentive based. I believe charity should be a product of free will, and its best when it is a product of free will going where the individual intends it, doing what they designate, and going to those they believe deserve it. This is the core of conservatism. It is good. And I choose to live it.

Muslims United to Stop Terrorism: By Nadra Enzi

image

As a Black Muslim, I can’t sign on with Al Queda et. al because they’d gladly blow up every house of worship that didn’t subscribe to their philosophy and would take out the Apollo Theater; every historically Black college and university and who knows what else. In their eyes, few of us make the final cut and consequently that’s a team I can’t support. This country is my home and I take attempts to threaten it very seriously.

Hip-Hop Conservatism:Pure Unregulated Capitalism (Part 1)

image

Hip-hop artists like Will.I.Am. were on the campaign trail with Barrack Obama from the beginning. After his election, Young Jeezy released the voracious “My President is Black”, a bombastic track that aspired to be the new black anthem and seemed to imply a melding between Hip-Hop culture and mainstream society. On the night of the inauguration, Barrack Obama was showered in praises, blessings, and performances dedicated in his honor by powerful hip-hop luminaries like Jay-Z and Kanye West. Can you imagine the Juice Crew dedicating a rendition of “The Symphony” at the inauguration of Jesse Jackson in 88′? More likely it would have been The Four Tops or The Temptations.

It certainly wouldn’t have been Gil Scott Heron.
