Powell’s marketability as a political candidate became quite clear. Both political parties, therefore, tried to claim him as one of their members. The Democrats sighted his work on behalf of Democratic Administrations while The Republicans sighted his work on behalf of Presidents Nixon, Reagan, and George H. W. Bush. Finally, in 1995, Colin Luther Powell openly declared himself a Republican campaigning exclusively for Republican Candidates.

Racism is not the the sole domain of Republicans, Conservatives or Southerners. Not all racists pepper their conversation with the N-word or secretly desire the extermination of black and brown people. Racism is complex, multi-layered, and deeply rooted in the American story. Name calling is not helpful in uprooting racism, but neither is a false sense of moral superiority.

The question for many Harlem residents is, “are you better off now then you were four years ago or eight years ago.” Sadly, the response may be no, and Bush’s eight years is not the only thing keeping Harlem back from progress. Imagine a Harlem that held its elected officials accountable offering a transparent style of representing. Imagine a Harlem that didn’t believe in 3o year career politicians sitting comfortably in the Harlem State Office Building on 125th & Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard. This Harlem could bring about an era of peace, prosperity, innovation, and economic empowerment that only the Late Hon. Reverend Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. could’ve imagined for all of Harlem.
