By HHR | July 2nd, 2009 | Category: Campaigns |
Susan taught herself some English, read every American book she could get my hands on, and joined the underground protest movement. Because of my “counterrevolutionary” writing, the Chinese government sent me to prison for a year in the 1970s. It gave her a lot of time to think about who she is and what she stands for.
After China emerged from its madness, Susan applied for a university education and earned a place at Peking University, where she did her undergraduate work and got her master’s degree in history. In 1987, she fulfilled a lifelong dream and came to the United States to study.
She earned a Ph.D. in sociology from Harvard University in 1995 and since that time have held teaching posts at UCLA, George Washington University and George Mason University. She also worked as a manager for Radio-Free Asia, which provides accurate news to people in Asian countries whose governments prohibit access to a free press.
She has lived in Virginia for 11 years and have been active in the Asian-American community.
HHR NOTE: She is also a blogger.
