Dignity. Sanity. Safety. Government-addicted low income communities of any color have precious little of these values. South Carolina’s firebrand Lt. Governor recently chimed in on this hot button topic. His remarks sparked a Black and Democratic (often the same) firestorm. My Black Dem friends, hard workers paradoxically supporting free rides for the least productive, peppered me with their usual rebuttal: “There are more White folks on welfare than Blacks.” True. My argument remains there are more of us are on it per capita. Some in the Black community abuse this and other entitlements as bootleg reparations. In return inner city neighborhoods swell with bad actors condemning residents to a living hell. White America has far more infrastructure to absorb state-sponsored dysfunction. We don’t have the same infrastructure and enabling such behavior undermines inner cities daily.

Many Americans hear “welfare” and think “Black.” The fact that more Whites are government addicted goes unnoticed. Hard questions need to be asked about giving money for essentially nothing worthwhile in return. My late parents used to rail against armies of well dressed young women in post office lines awaiting welfare checks. This subject is a sore one among many old school Black Democrats who had to work like slaves for little in return. A cosmetic upgrade now has benefits direct deposited onto debit cards.

Free day care and cell phones are also provided. While none should deny assistance to those laid off and in other legitimate need, questions arise concerning young women of any color who use children as collateral. The end result of such public investment is often higher crime rates among parents and children. Single mothers have essentially held society hostage by daring it not to support their children. When banks try such extortion tactics there’s national outcry. Why the silence when shake downs come from this segment?

Understandable anger over one South Carolina politician’s comments apparently overrides millions abusing the sweat of others. We can toss crooked businessmen fat off government contracts into this category- yet another group of non-Black get over artists by the way. The bigger picture is one of a rainbow coalition of grifters robbing the public blind.

While welfare is often suspected of use by Republicans as a buzz word against hostile Black Democratic majorities, it is a problem for everyone. The issue still needs frank discussion. “Even the devil can quote scripture” my late mother warned. Welfare hasn’t made low income communities of all colors produce great returns on public dollars. Location and recipient ethnicity are irrelevant in the broader sense. Neighborhoods like mine are up to our throats in problems made by the current welfare system. Saying other people get it more still doesn’t undo this system’s disproportionate impact. My response remains the same, “So what if more Whites are on welfare!! ”

Look at what it’s doing to low income communities like mine.

  1. I call the question “who administers the family assistance” a.k.a. welfare programs? Oh yes, diversity in the office regarding the skin color of the staff that answer telephones and help with filling out the forms but in some instances the major decision maker who can give a thumbs up or a thumbs down whether this single head-of-household or that single head-of-household will be a White, Anglo-Saxon Protestant. Ah, if only our ancestors could have railed against those farmers and business that got welfare, only the term gets prettied up for the aforementioned groups and is titled “subsidy”. Many Americans do think “Black” when welfare comes to mind. Ronald Reagan used the term “welfare queen”. Imagine that from the Great Communicator, (alias have 3×5 index cards will travel) whose own son Ron and his wife were on welfare for a New York minute, he did not want daddy’s or mommy’s help. Do not forget Richard Milhous “let me make this perfectly clear” Nixon who invited that country singer to the White House to sing about the “Welfare Cadillac”. No low income community can be found who is going say “take your welfare program and shove it” because there are strings attached. Scripture quotations and the sweet by and by are not going to pay electric or gas bills nor will they buy groceries. A pragmatic discussion on the whole set-up would be good but American politicians are not known for this trait.

  2. Time to make an update, The New York Times now reports that blacks out number whites on the welfare rolls. As well as the fact that the avg white on the roll spends 1/20 of the time a black american does. They also state that the wait time for a black American to obtain welfare is half the time of a white. But one must reminded of the fact that whites make up 70% of the US population. So if you do the math and look at per a capita studies whites never had a greater % on the rolls than blacks.

  3. Stop lying whites have always probably always will make up the biggest number on welfare rolls. Despite this big myth that whites love to work hard a lot of them are looking for hand outs. Also please stop with the per capita BS. Look at the raw numbers and quit trying to twist them. There are more whites on welfare period end of story. You guys have done this all throughout history you lie and manipulate things to try and make yourselves look bettr. A very sad mentality to have in my honest opinion.

  4. There are more whites on welfare because there are more whites in the population.(Hispanics [legal and illegal], depending on how they answer the census questions, are sometimes listed as “white” in the recent census and make up a large number of these recipients.) The numbers of “white” and “black” vary greatly depending upon the source. I’ve seen as wild a statement as 50% of whites are on welfare. Nada.

This is old data (2007), but seems to difficult to find more recent:
    http://www.cbpp.org/cms/?fa=view&id=193
One in three food stamp households is headed by an African American. More than a third of food stamp benefits — over $10 billion per year — are issued to African-Americans. (According to Census data, African Americans make up about 12 percent of the U.S. population.)
    Here’s another also old (2000): http://www.newcoalition.org/Article.cfm?artId=152
“Aid to black and Hispanic welfare recipients is greater in proportion to the size of their populations than is aid to white recipients. This can be seen by determining the average welfare expenditure per person for each ethnic group.”

Here is another source (2006 numbers): http://www.topix.com/forum/afam/T214JD55H1AU6P4A5
Based on the 2006 TOTAL population of each respective race in the United States, it is:

5.27% white*(5.27% of the white population is on welfare)
27.78% black*(27.78% of the black population is on welfare)
11.47% Hispanic***(11.47% of the Hispanic population is on welfare)

Another way to look at this data is based on the total number of people who receive welfare.

1 in 18 whites recieve welfare.
1 in 3.5 blacks recieve welfare
