Black GOP Activist to Gather in Washington, DC

us_capitol_57214352_stdWashington, DC - On Friday, September 17, 2010 Republicans for Black Empowerment will hold its fourth annual gathering of GOP activists. The event, which occurs every year, acts as a conservative alternative to the more liberal leaning Congressional Black Caucus event, which is held the same day.

This year’s special guest will include S.C. Rep. Timothy Scott who was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives for District 117 in 2008, becoming the first Republican African-American representative in more than 100 years. He is currently the Republican nominee for Congress for the 1st Congressional district seat.

If Scott wins the Congressional seat, he would become the first African-American Republican in Congress since J.C. Watts retired in 2003.He will also be the first African American Republican elected to Congress from South Carolina in 114 years.

This years sponsors include Black Republican Women International; District of Columbia Black Republican Council; District of Columbia Republican Central Committee; DC Young Republicans; Frederick Douglass Republican Forum of Virginia; Howard University College Republicans; Republican Central Committee for Prince Georges County, Maryland. Other speakers at this year’s event include Marvin Rogers, the author of Silence Makes the Loudest Sound: A Conversation between African Americans and the Republican Party.
