Black Mormon makes bid for Salt Lake City County Council

After crossing the country to serve as civil-rights chief for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Winston Wilkinson has announced plans to pursue a more familiar political path in his home state: Running for the Salt Lake County Council.

 Wilkinson knows the office well.

When Salt Lake County abandoned its commission government at the turn of the century, Wilkinson was among the first members of the new County Council. He served a two-year term, but bypassed the chance for re-election when he launched an ultimately unsuccessful campaign for Congress.

Now, the Republican wants a second term on the County Council.

Instead of seeking his old south-valley District 5 seat — he no longer lives in that district — he wants to snatch up the countywide seat that Democratic Councilwoman Jenny Wilson plans to vacate next year.

If successful, Wilkinson could disrupt the council’s narrow 5-4 Democratic majority.

“I want to go back and take care of some unfinished business,”

Wilkinson said Monday.

And part of that business is restoring Republican rule to a county now led at both the legislative and executive levels by Democrats. (Mayor Peter Corroon is a Democrat.)

Wilkinson disagrees with the Democrats’ recent decision to raise $13.4 million in property taxes and says the council “needs some fresh eyes and innovative ideas” to weather the economic storm that continues to buffet the budget.
