UPDATE: Gov Bobby Jindal: Revokes License of JP that denied Interracial Marriage

bobby_jindal_standardNEW ORLEANS — Outrage over a justice of the peace that refused to issue a marriage license for an interracial couple grew, with civil and constitutional rights organizations and the parish president calling for the man to resign immediately.

Gov. Bobby Jindal said that it was a violation of constitutional rights and called for an investigation.

Gov. Jindal also issued a strongly-worded statement: “This is a clear violation of constitutional rights and federal and state law. Mr. Bardwell’s actions should be fully reviewed by the Judiciary Commission and disciplinary action should be taken immediately – including the revoking of his license.”

  1. Good Job GOV!!

  2. YES!! You did the right thing!

  3. I’m an African American male who lives in Louisiana with my Caucasian wife and mixed 7 month old daughter baby and am only marginally surprised by the justice of the peaces refusal to marry an interracial couple. Don’t get me wrong there are many people here that are as open minded as can be, but there are others that are extremely prejudiced. All I have to say is its Louisiana. While I am not from here, we are here nonetheless due to the military. When our time here is served, you can believe that we will be moving somewhere else to raise our children.

All that I can hope is that maybe the attention received by this incident shared with many others will continue to shed some light on how behind Louisiana or the south really is. Good job Governor Jindal.
