Former Black Democrat Speaks Out!

Part 2

88a90e1b942f90c4fbbaf74aed135f0aI am a 30 something professional who had been a “Good African American Democrat ” all of my life until the election of 2008. Or perhaps I should say the Democratic Primaries of 2007/2008. I was a Hillary Clinton supporter and had waited many years for her to run for POTUS. She was my senator (I was an NYC resident until 2007) and my favorite First Lady. In 2007 I was happy to see the Bush years end, get my Hill in office and become a proud Democrat once again. After sitting out the election of 2004 (I saw both Bush and Kerry as inclined to ineffectiveness) Afrocity was ready to pull that lever.

ALAS, IT WAS NEVER TO BE

SOMEONE PEED IN THE BATHWATER

Obama was elected. It was the straw that broke this donkey’s back.

I will never vote for a Democrat again. My relationship with the DNC has been troubled from the beginning . Much to the dismay of my family and friends I came out as a conservative in 2008. This shift in my political ideology was more complex than I had anticipated. The strongest challenges relate to my gender and ethnicity such as societal perceptions of what makes a good African American feminist. I had to break free of the labels and look at my values not as a Democrat or a Republican, but as Afrocity.

I believe in the separation of church and state
I am pro-choice
I believe in fiscal conservatism
I support the 2nd amendment
I support a strong military
I support energy independence for the US
I have no opinion on gay marriage. I strongly favor domestic unions.
I am not in total favor of universal healthcare (sorry liberals).
I am not in favor of affirmative action
I would not be opposed to a temporary policy of non-interventionism until the US gets its shit together.
Being pro-choice and African American were the only circumstances that held me prisoner as a Democrat.

My mother once told me that “no self-respecting” Black would ever be a Republican”

She was wrong. It took me years to stand up to her. After she died in 2007, I still felt her in the voting booth with me shaking her head in disbelief when I cast my vote for John McCain and Sarah Palin. Sorry, mom. I love you but country comes before party, before gender, before color.

A political party such as the Democrats have the opportunity to exercise leadership and bring out the best in Americans, instead however, they play Orwellian Animal Farm games by creating a haven for victims and moonbats by creating a bottomfeeder’s all you can eat buffet of identity politics. They are victims more than fools. I saw a man with no experience or talent beyond habitually running for a higher office other than the one he currently holds, nominated for POTUS that was rationalized on the grounds that African American’s were due our “historic moment”. Forget that two women were also invoved. This was Barry the “Anointed One” . Presently pampers” historic moment was short lived and the 98% of African Americans countless women who voted for Obama will never look in the DNC ’s jackass shaped mirror and see Cinderella. The day after inauguration the golden ticket expired and the chariot turned into a beat up old Nova. The feast was wilted arugula and the reflection showed women and minorities that were just as enslaved as they were before Obama was elected.

This blog is a place for women, men, democrats or conservatives, gay, straight, religious or not. But I will warn you that this is a CONSERVATIVE blog.

It is not a place for Obamabots or Liberal moonbats. NO KOOL AID MOUNTAIN DWELLERS. NO ASSHOLES. NO 9/11 DENIERS

I want nice posters with balls. No sycophants. No name calling.

I love guitars so if you ever want to talk music especially blues or jazz let me know.

We judge here by the content of one’s character and not by the color of his skin, political affiliation, or whether they pee sitting down or standing up.

Now go play nicely in the sandbox.

Good for you! Unfortunately, the religious right has hijacked the party. More logical voices are needed instead of the Kool Aid tinged ones we so often hear.

    .

  2. Excellent post! The only thing I will disagree with you on is being pro-choice. It is my view that the black community were targeted by Planned Parenthood from the beginning. It’s founder , Margaret Sanger, was in favor of eugenics. A bit about her racist ideology is explained here (where she talks about the “Negro Problem” and “the solution” being birth control:

Check out this video of my friend Claver in Houston who fights the good fight at ragingelephants.org and explains how abortion affects the black community: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyB5TniZTX0&feature=player_embedded

Also here is an EXCELLENT page on “The People of America In Black and White” with videos of African Americans involved in the tea parties, proving that it’s about liberty, not color.

    Welcome HOME! http://rightwingsparkle.blogspot.com/2009/07/black-history-my-history-and-arms-open.html (my blog)

    Sorry for all the links!

  3. As an African American female, I totally agree with you.

I would probaly be a Republican if it were not for the indifference this party has towards minorities. I have tried attending GOP meetings here in Virginia just out of curiosity. The people at these events never come up to speak to me and seem to try to stay far away. The GOP has some major race issues to deal with before I will even think about joining there party. A few weeks back I stayed at an event for 3 hours and not one person spoke to me! As far as abortion, I am opposed to it but that alone will not make me be a Republican.

The GOP needs an economic solution to inner-city areas as of now they are not even participants on the ground in minority communities. You are opposed to abortion yet there are people without jobs and hurting. You should be passionate about both the unborn and the born. I am not saying that the Republican Party is racist but it is very indifferent to the concerns of minorities. Take a glimpse at State GOP websites and you will notice they offer little in way of minority outreach.

It’s a shame that the GOP has very little minorities especially given that there are many minorities who agree with them. The Party’s indifference and outright hostility towards even mentioned minority is shameful. Republicans look like deer’s in headlights whenever they are confronted on the issue of race.

  4. You’re a racist.. You just know that Obama is 7/8ths white and you voted against that part of him, just like I’m a white guy who voted against the 1/8th of him that’s black.. :D
OK, seriously though. Good for you. People need to get past the skin color thing and vote for the person he BELONGS in office and will do what’s best for this country. You voted for the wrong guy, of course, because we all know Ron Paul is the man, but that’s ok. You still moved past the race issue and voted your heart and mind and I applaud you for taking a stand and doing what you felt was right!

  5. I am a recovering liberal turned libertarian, so I can relate to your story, Afrocity. Congratulations for seeing beyond party labels. My only advice is this: Don’t follow the Republicans blindly either. Vote for the person, not the party,

    Best wishes!

  6. My God girl, you are my new hero! Even as a writer of more than 20 years, I could NOT have said that better than you. From one Black conservative to another: you are awesome! I can’t wait to read more. Check me out at prjacqui.wordpress.com.

  7. Thank you for knowing and speaking your mind, Afrocity. And the greatest thanks of all that you questioned yourself and the information you were given.

Shakira, I’m sorry you had that experience. I live in WA state. I went to a townhall but stayed outside as it was full inside. I saw this older black gentleman a couple of times and finally caught his eye and smiled at him. I didn’t know if we were “on the same side” of the townhall issue or not, but he looked nice. He came over to me later and we started chatting. Turned out he is nearly 70 and I turned 31 that week. He is a conservative although he too shuns the Republican party. I’ve always found a home in the Republican party with it’s warts and all. We talked for over an hour and he walked me to my car, I drove him to his. We’ve already started writing letters to each other to keep in touch and feel like kindred spirits. I hope you find camaraderie among people with similar values to your own. And thank you, Shakira, for speaking for the unborn. I believe in their personhood and that they should thereby have legal protection under our wonderful constitution.

  8. Holy Cow! ….” I’ve always found a home in the Republican party with it’s warts and all. ” they disparage us ppl of color the minute your back is turned and sometimes right to our face, Joe Wilson ring a bell? Warts and All is that what you call disenfranchising of Voters in FL, disenfranchising black Troops serving in Iraq?

OK, to you I only need point out…..SCOREBOARD – black POTUS, Dems 1……..Repukes <0, Less than Zero,…. NEVER, Not Now, not EVER, NEVER!! I dare you to posit otherwise, dbl dog dare you!!!

  9. “I just felt I should vote for the person I felt was right for the job.”
    Right!
You have transcended the chains of ethnic, gender, color identity and understand that values and competence matters most!
    Welcome to being an American!
(btw – check out BTWSociety.org – learn about Booker T. Washington – the man liberals don’t want you to know.)

  11. You are amazing and I hope to either see more of your video blogs or read some columns by you!

    Thanks!

  12. AFROCITY, I AM APAULED BY WHAT YOU SAY, THAT PRESIDENT OBAMA SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ELECTED IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN HILARY CLINTON. GIRL GET REAL. YOU MUST BE A LESBIAN WITH AN ATTITUDE TO EVEN SUGGEST SOMETHING SO RIDICULOUS. I REALLY THINK THAT YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH YOUR RACE AND IF THAT IS THE CASE GET OVER IT. FOR YOU TO NOT BELIEVE THAT AFFIRMATIVE ACTION IS NOT NEEDED YOU ARE TRULY CRAZY. HOW THE HELL DO YOU THINK PEOPLE OF COLOR GOT INTO SOME OF THE POSITION’S THEY WERE IN DURING THE 70′S? WE HAVE A SUPREME COPURT JUSTICE CLARENCE THOMAS WHO IS IN THE SEAT BECAUSE OF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION EVEN THOUGH HE DOES NOT WANT TO ADMIT IT. I SEE PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND SHAKE MY HEAD AT YOU BECAUSE YOUR SO IGNORANT. RESEARCH YOUR HISTORY AND GET REAL. I KNOW THAT YOU WON’T POST THIS BUT AT LEAST YOU READ IT.

  13. Hi! I would just like to point out an obvious extreme… I keep hearing it said that we are saying, “Everybody that disagrees with President Obama is a racist.” This simply is not true. This is what I feel . . . Not everyone agrees with the president’s policies … and there is nothing wrong with that. But there is a small cross-section of America that is repulsed at the notion of having a black president. If you don’t believe this to be true… go to YOUTUBE and take your pick from the plethora of videos on proud display. Race is indeed a factor… not the sole factor… but indeed; it has its role. This is America’s opportunity to get real and deal with this. The cat has been let out of the bag… by whites, blacks, and brown people alike. Everytime the comics and signs and pictures designed to stereotypically depict President Obama as a dead ape, or with a watermelon patch in front of the white house, EVERYONE knows the intent, but when a spade is called a spade… the person calling it out as unacceptable is labelled as playing the race card.

RACISM is a factor in all of this madness going on today! Not the sole factor…. but IT IS A FACTOR. One thing that is really pissing me off (please excuse me), is when what I have witnessed to be blatant racism and disrespect is invalidated or denounced by a black person that makes it … NOT RACISM. Prime example . . . Congressman Wilson. . . He didn’t use racial epithets, – too obvious. Of course he wouldn’t scream out Ni@@er in the halls of congress. Are you kidding … wayyy to obvious. But he did yell out “You Lie”… something he would never have done with any other president. Racism is not only verbal… the fact that he felt comfortable enough to do this in and of itself is apalling. Also, do some research on good ole Congressman Wilson. I think his past gives credence to the position he took on the day he publicly disrespected President Obama.

C’mon, all of us can’t be wrong. I’m not asking you to take sides. There really is racism . . . don’t act like there isn’t. I would just like for once… people to be real and say what is really going on. Step back and look as objectively as you can . Yes, we have made progress, but that doesn’t mean that we are done. And from the way things look today … that is evident.

  14. One last thing. . . there is a tangible tension in the atmosphere. If we don’t get real, things will never get better. People are sooo quick to say racism is NOT a factor. . . please read the news. There was a lady in Georgia who became the victim of a hate crime. A coward of a man beat and kicked her as he yelled racial epithets at her in the presence of his wife and her daughter. There is something seriously wrong with that? Why was it reported that membership in white supremacy groups skyrocket once President Obama was elected. And … please … don’t even get me started on Fox “News” (loosely) Network and their husband and wife team Bannity (Beck and Hannity), Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly. Their ignorance and lunacy, all but strip republicans/conservatives (or all of their viewership) of any dignity or integrity it once had before they began the vicious, vile maligning of President Obama. If it was really “all about politics and no racism”… this degree of attacks would not be consistent. Glenn Beck and his crocodile tears.

Dave Matthews (Dave Matthews Band) says in an interview with CNN:

Matthews: I think a lot of it has to be on the press. We give the podium to a lot of people who shouldn’t have the podium. The message that’s delivered the loudest and in the most entertaining way is the one that we’re going to put on because that’s what we want. We want ratings more than we want to deliver information. That’s just where the culture’s gotten.

There’s no way that Walter Cronkite, as a young journalist, no way Ed Murrow would be hired to do news today. Not a chance.

CNN: Because they’re too low-key? Because they’re not bombastic?

Matthews: Because they’re thoughtful, and they’re patient, and they’re tying to tell you a truly balanced story. They’re trying to impart information. I don’t think that’s the goal [now] because it’s not a good business plan. …

    Wake up, please!

  15. P.S.: Afrocity, You are stunningly beautiful and intelligent. Don’t worry, I’m a female, married with 3 children and 1 on the way in a few months. I love your writing and the way you articulate your thoughts. Bye

    Very respectfully,
    Me

  16. I think that is sad, after hearing of passing in 2007. I think she would have cried like Jesse Jackson to see Obama win. People dont understand that hope was finally achieved that many thought was centuries away. They have it too easy now days to easily choose and not support an historic presidency. After many democratic reforms like civic rights act that resulted in bloodshed do they all the suddenly not support a democrats. I honestly believe jesus christ would love to give universal health care to the poor but conservatives call anyone who disagrees with them hitler.

  17. And Democrats accuse people who disagree with them of being Fascist, Racist, and against Civil Rights. Just as a historical not while it’s true that many “Conservatives” opposed civil rights legislation many “Republicans” did.

The Republicans who today who are generally called moderates use to dominate the Party. These did support the Civil Rights Act and without them there would have been no act. The Democrats opposed the Civil Rights act overwhelmingly despite the President who signed it into law being one.

Today the Republican Party’s most activist base is Conservatives so there is some confusion as to what a Republican is. Being Republican does not mean being
Conservative one is a school of thought under the other. Conservatives have always been with the GOP but so has Progressives, Whigs and a host of other interest groups. Today however the dominant wing of the Party is Conservatism.

  18. Just a quick opinion here. I spent most of my adult life strongly pro-choice. I have recently changed my mind on the concept but that’s another story. Even when I was so strongly of that opinion though, I never held anything against pro-lifers. I believed their motives were to save what they perceived to be little babies. It wouldn’t make sense to let that affect voting for a person I otherwise agreed with. If a candidate is a true supporter of the Constitution, their “religiousness” shouldn’t get in the way of us supporting them. We have to be VERY careful to stick together, conservatives, moderates, and libertarians, in order to defeat those who plan to dismantle our Constitution. It is about the CONSTITUTION, not the personal differences among us. By supporting these candidates together, we all win. BTW, to the person who was ignored at the republican meeting, don’t feel bad. Their are a lot of rude types in BOTH parties. I’m assuming they were mostly a white group of people? If so, maybe they didn’t want to be perceived as singling you out either. It can be a catch 22 these days. Who knows whats in peoples heads. I can guarantee you are very welcome and wanted in the Republican party.
