-Breaking News -

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid apologized Saturday following reports he had privately described then-candidate Barack Obama during the presidential campaign as a black candidate who could be successful thanks in part to his light-skinned” appearance and speaking patterns “with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.”

Journalists Mark Halperin and John Heilemann reported the remarks in their new book “Game Change,” which was purchased by CNN Saturday at a Washington-area bookstore. The book is slated for official release next Tuesday.

“He (Reid) was wowed by Obama’s oratorical gifts and believed that the country was ready to embrace a black presidential candidate, especially one such as Obama – a ‘light-skinned’ African American ‘with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one,’ as he said privately. Reid was convinced, in fact, that Obama’s race would help him more than hurt him in a bid for the Democratic nomination,” they write.

“I deeply regret using such a poor choice of words,” Reid said in a statement to CNN. (Update 3:15 pm:Reid spokesman Jim Manley tells CNN that the senator also called President Obama Saturday afternoon to apologize for his remark.)

“I sincerely apologize for offending any and all Americans, especially African Americans for my improper comments

HHR NOTE: He should be fired!  We all know that  had this been a Republican,  there would be calls for his/her  head. This statement by Reid shows that despite being liberal, you can be racist!  This is much worse than anything that Sen. Trent Lott said yet the same Democrats who attacked Lott are probaly going to give Harry (Racist) Reid a pass?

  1. I tend to believe bad liberal policy often comes from latent racism…… Jim Crow comes to mind. But you know what, this doesn’t only show his racism for blacks, it shows how he views a “racist” America assuming people would ever give a vote to someone dark.

  2. No surprise.

  3. No surprise….. I can’t tell you how many times black folks have been called UNCLE TOM on this sight for being Republican. WHAT IS REED?
KEEP’ EM helpless, keep’em asking for handouts and you keep’em voting for you.
This should be a wake-up call to the 90+ percent of black SHEEP that blindly vote for DEMOCRATS… year….. after year…… after year……… and nothing ever changes……….. why is this even a surprise? there are just as many RACIST LIBERALS as there are RACIST CONSERVATIVES. If you thought different you never lived UP NORTH

We don’t need to Fire REED he’ll be voted out or not run in 2010

  4. Some consider the term Negro as normal to the much older generation of African Americans.

The idenifiication coming from a White Democratic Leader of the Senate makes these comments real and offending. How?

The term “Light Skinned” defines as an acceptable shade of skin color by this Senator of Obama. So if he was darker this would not have been acceptable. ?

What of Reid’s comment of “with no Negro dialect”

As to make a point that many/all/some African Americans use this so call “Negro dialect”??

In other words, can’t speak proper english or White? “unless, he (Obama) wanted to have one.”

In other words unless Obama wanted to speak Negro to Who/whom? The Negro’s/blacks/African Americans/his kind?

Racism in denial again in the Democratic Party just as much as in any group or party.

This is a fact.. This does not change the standing facts that Senator Ried openly in his own words made such comments. Ried’s own words/beliefs of what he really feels about people of color again comes to light.

Many Progressive Democrats will make hard claims that this was not a racist comment. Many Black leader like Sharpton will accept these comments like it does not matter as long as they can get some money /stimulas to ignore it.

White America just as black, Latino and other all have racist beliefs.. But if your a representative of the people, those comments should not be acceptable.

  5. So what? As long as he is helping black/poor people by passing a healthcare bill who fucking cares?

  6. Can people not distinguish a racist comment from a comment on racism? Reid made the latter and any attempt to portray him as a racist because of his comment is just political garbage. The truth is, racism still exist in the good old US of A and it would make it next to impossible for a dark-skinned black man with an accent to be elected President. That is all Reid said. Was he wrong? His choice of the word “negro” is archaic in this day and age but is probably more reflective of his age than his opinion of black people.

  7. Can people not distinguish a racist comment from a comment on racism? No, while its true that the statement was “a comment about race” it was still a racist comment concerning race. A comment that he clearly believed to be true. Reid is no idiot he is the Senate majority leader. There are other ways to comment about race without using the terms “Negro dialect” .. Maybe had he said it in the 30′s, 60′s even but not in 2010!!

    Sorry. Don’t buy it!!!

  8. So if he had used the term “African-American dialect” you would be OK with his comment and if not, why not? Is it only the use of the word “Negro” that bothers you? He was making a comment about the electorate’s response to Obama, not about Obama personally or about Black people in general.

James, It bothers me that this so call leader of the Democratic party would say such things.. Read my post.. Who do you think he’s talking about? It’s not just about Obama… It’s the big democratic Progressive lie which still exist in America..,
Being in denial or not affected by Rieds comments as “oh it was just a joke” ha ha ha…

Right, what if McCain said this, what if Rush said this? It is unacceptable.

  10. The controversy seems to center around his use of the word “Negro”. I think this shows more that he is old and out of touch, not that he is racist. Otherwise his statement is simply an acknowledgement of the latent racism in parts of the white electorate. With all due respect, if you can’t see the basic truth in his statement, I think you are the one in denial.

On the use of the word “Negro”, is the UNCF a racist organization because of what the N stands for? I don’t think so. It’s just that their name is a legacy of an earlier time, just like Reid’s vocabulary. Now if he had used the other “N” word you would have a point, but he didn’t.

Reid’s record in the Senate is hardly the record of an avowed racist and I think actions should speak louder than words. I’m sure political opponents can find plenty to criticize the man for but this is just pure BS. I would be more concerned about him belonging to the Mormons, a religion with a clearly racist past, but that would also apply to Mitt Romney. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t understand why the Democrats elected this particular guy as Majority leader, but it has more to do with how weak he seems, not any fear on my part that he is a racist.

BTW, if Rush Limbaugh had said this, I think it would have gone unnoticed, compared to some of the other outrageous stuff he has said about Obama. (He hates white people. Colin Powell only endorsed him because he is black … that kind of thing). If the Republican party is ever going to have any chance of convincing black people to vote Republican, it needs to stop cozying up to real racists like Limbaugh and stop creating fake controversies like this one.

  11. Of course he apologized, the “fear factor” of losing black votes for the Democractic party kicked in. Senator Reid makes a good case where politicians should be sure their brains are engaged before opening their mouths.

  12. “Negro dialect” is not about skin color. How you talk is a cultural marker related to how you dress; it’s a way a person can present his or her sense of identity to the world. Among poor people of all kinds– think “youse guys”– speech patterns appear to be a kind of not-so-secret handshake. And some rich people, too; think Katherine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story.

It’s an artificial display of self-confidence, like a woman wearing too much makeup, and it’s a strong indicator of defensiveness. In the black community, I think, there’s a more noticeable percentage of people who do that. They visibly go out of their way to make their sense of identity be about how they talk and dress. Would you have voted for Palin if she was wearing so much makeup that she looked like a hooker? What about Bush if he were a name-dropper who lit cigars with $50 bills and drove around in a gold-anodized Mercedes convertible because he thought that would make people think he was hot shit? Barney Frank (sorry, but I can’t think of someone comparable to him who’s a Republican) if he clearly went out of his way to act swishier than he does naturally? We all have a bullshit detector and judge people by how they present themselves. And too strong a sense of group identity is associated in intuition with limited horizons, limited intelligence and an obsession with surface appearances in every part of life.

Harry Reid’s Racist Mormon Beliefs Exposed in Illinois Senate Contest

Reid’s Rejects: From left, Jackson, Davis, and Jones

I knew eventually that the Democratic party’s leadership being infiltrated by Mormons would hurt us. I have made clear I believe Mormonism to be a racist, sexist, homophobic, fraudulent, and bizarre cult so if you’re coming in late and are astounded that I make no apology for my views, well…you’re coming in late.

Reid is clearly letting his Mormon beliefs override good sense, assuming he has any.

Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is making my worst fears a reality. How this man got to be Senate Majority Leader is a mystery to me but he needs to go. Reid is clearly letting his Mormon beliefs override good sense, assuming he has any. By calling on Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich not to appoint an African-American to succeed Barack Obama in the Senate, he is taking the Democratic party into the wacko zone with him.
