In the summer of 2000, I worked as a legal intern for an NGO in Nairobi and remember an eye opening conversation in a taxi. The driver told me he wished the US and other donor nations would stop sending money to Africa. “If you don’t send money, we starve. If you send money, we starve.” Throwing $$$ at problems doesn’t work . (Obama, are you listening?) People need traing to become self-sufficient and not dependent on handouts.
