HHR Exclusive Interview :”DJ Stacey Stylez”

stacy2HHR Blog  recently sat down to do an interview with DJ Stacy Stylez New York City’s leading female club DJ.  Her fun mixes of Hip Hop, Old Skool Hip Hop, 80′s pop and rock always keeps the crowd happy.

Stacy is known to “bring the crowd and keep them there”. Don’t be surprised if she takes out her light up tambourine during a set, or if she dances right along with you from the DJ booth. Stacy knows her music very well and has a keen sense on reading the crowd.

DJ Stacy stylez not only spins at NYC’s hottest venues, but is also a must have for A-List events. Her party circuit track record includes The David Letterman Show, Saturday Night Live, The New York Yankee’s, MTV, E! Network, Sundance Film Festival, Pre/Post Grammy parties, events for New York City’s Mayor Bloomberg and much more.

HHR Exclusive Interview:”DJ Stacey Stylez”

HHR Blog: As one of NYC’s top DJ’s tell us about yourself…where are you from…where were you born…where were you raised…which city and state are currently home to you?

postcard16I am a true New Yorker, born and raised. I grew up on Long Island, in Suffolk County and moved into Manhattan for College. I always felt like a “City girl” and felt right at home in Manhattan. I stayed in Manhattan for a while and just recently moved to Astoria, Queens.

HHR Blog: What type of a family did you grow up in?

A VERY Artistic, warm, eccentric, loving, caring, Jewish Family! My Mom is an actress and air-brush artist, who always instill(s) creativity in my sister and I. We’re a small, but very tight family. A lot of my extended family lives in Australia but I have some scattered about NY, Florida, and elsewhere. My Mom and Sister are my rock and my best friends.

HHR Blog: What do you like about the city and the state you currently live in?

Its home! I am fortunate enough to travel the world DJ’ing. I get to see all different cities, experience their culture and embrace it. BUT NY will always be home and nothing compares to it!

HHR Blog:
Do you currently belong to a band?

I DJ along with bands, and travel with bands, but not currently exclusive with any one band.

HHR Blog:Which do you prefer: performing solo or with a band?

Solo! I have freedom to express myself as I see fit, and play for the audience in front of me. Playing with bands is great but I rather open for them, then be their on stage DJ. It requires a lot of rrehearsals on so many levels (ie Sound, dance-choreography, stage routine, tracks, production etc. etc.), Working with other DJ’s is great as well..There has been times where as much as 5 DJ’s were playing along with me, back and forth. That energy can never be duplicated, it was amazing!

HHR Blog: Can you dance?  On a scale of from one to ten, with ten being phenomenal, how good of a dancer are you?

ABSOLUTELY! All styles..I’m pretty darn good! :-) I say a 6.5, I’ve seen some 10′s and let’s just say I was left speechless, people can do some crazy moves!

HHR Blog:
If you do dance, what type of dance do you do?

Hip Hop, club, Stacy Stylez’ own moves, Salsa, Meringue, Bachata, Tango, Rumba, Samba and Cha-Cha…anything that moves me, I move to!!!

HHRBlog: What inspires you as an artist be it singing a song or writing a song?

I find inspiration in so many places and moments. Its not a “what” but more of a “when” and “why”…things inspire me when least expected. Usually I’m in some obscure place and something will just spark. If I have to say “Who” inspires me the most that’s definitely My Mother and Sister. I watch some amazing DJ’s that I strive to be like and I find myself motivated with inspiration, and a burning desire.

HHR Blog: Have you ever been in love? How does being in love, or never having been in love influence you as a performing artist and as a songwriter?

YES! YES! and YES!!! I fall in love over and over again. Some people may not call it “LOVE” but I sure do. I love with all I’ve got! I am not just referring to people, or people as in a romantic relationship. What I mean is, I love life, I love to live, experience, feel, touch, understand, cry, and be emotional. Emotion and love are very close. We tend to get emotional over “things” we love. I love people that I may only encounter once, but they leave me with profound, life altering lessons. That “Gift” is a new deeper personal “Love” I will take that love with me and resort back to it many times. When I’m playing and feel the crowds “Love” I love them back, and feed off of it. I wouldn’t be the artist I am, nor person I am without having the ability and volnvulnerabilityallow myself to “Love”. Hopefully, one day, when I am married, I can turn to my husband and know a deeper, much more powerful and soulful word  other than “Love”, But I will always be in love with the magic all types of love can do!

HHR Blog:Whom have you signed contracts with as a musician?

I spun the NBA All Star game, Opened for The Black Eye’Eyeds, jonaJonasthers, Pink, UB40

HHR Blog: How old are you? How does you age flavor or temper your style as a recording artist and as a songwriter?

Lets pretend this question isn’t here and move on..lol

HHR Blog: LOL…Okay..Okay..Moving in ..What genre of music do you consider your work to be?

Mainly “mashmash-ups Hip Hop, 80′s, rock, pop, funk, disco, Motown and some house. I Love old school hip hop, Funk and Motown most of all, so I try and incorporate that into most of my sets.

HHR Blog: Are you successful abroad as well as in the United States, or is your success only a United States’ phenomena?

I have a huge fan base abroad. Sometimes it amazes me to be in a remote part of the world and have someone running after me for an autograph. DJ’s are viewed differently elsewhere, than in the United States. I love playing all over the world, gebegenerally energy is so great, and the respect is amazing. I am so thankful for my international fans and try to do as many Countries and Continents per year that I can.

HHR Blog: If you are successful abroad as a musician how does this compare to being successful in the United States? (SEE ABOVE AS WELL…)

In the United States we tend to forget sometimes how lucky we are to have constant “entertainment Stimuli” as i call it. We drive around listening to music blasting in our cars, we turn on the TV and find at least 85 music stations, 100′s of TV shows to choose from, Movies on demand, Ipods,  downloaded ringtones, ITunes, Online everything…The point is, in other places of the world, its a treat to go out and hear music, see a show or be a spectator at a sporting event. We are so spoiled by “Hollywood” that sometimes we don’t appreciate what we’re being entertained by. Around the world is so different, people stop and face the DJ when we’re playing, they listen to what it is we’re doing and breath it in. Suddenly I as the performer stop and realize all the people in front of me are understanding me, and allowing me to fully entertain them. I have learned so much about life, DJ’ing, and people as a whole from doing shows outside of the USA.

HHR Blog: Do you play any instruments?  Which instruments do you play?

TamboTambourinen

HHR Blog: Where have you performed?  What was your favorite venue?  What was your least favorite venue?

All over the world (To name only a few “places”: Amsterdam, Berlin, Greece, London, Canada, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Switzerland, Mykonos, 46 States (USA), many opening’ acts, Clubs, Private events, Grammy’s (Pre/Post), MTV Music Awards, Red Carpets, Sundance Film Festival, NBA All Star Game, I do mainly celebrity red carpet events, and large venues. My favorite time playing is when I’m at a arena/venue for the very first time and look out and see a massive crowd screaming for me and just having a great time! The only “least favorite” I can think of actually happened not too long ago in NYC. The venue is still around so I will leave it with just that. I was always taught “If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all”.

HHR Blogs: Is there an overriding theme to most of the songs you write and/or sing(spin)?

YES…Upbeat, fun, HAPPY, and make you wanna get up and dance. If I don’t see people at least bopping their heads to the beat, something is wrong. I want everyone to leave better, happier and humming a song till the next day!

HHR Blog: How has your music evolved since you became a musician?

SO MUCH!!! I hear things I never would have picked up on before. I mix different genre’s now, that I never would have before. Its all through Lots of practice, serious study, experimenting, trials and tribulations, and having amazing DJ friends as mentors.

HHR Blog: Are you married and do you have children?

No and No

HHR Blog: What has been your greatest challenge as a musician and as a songwriter?

Staying ahead of the game. Always staying on top of trends, knowing whats going to be hot in  months from now, and trying to help break new artists. I never see it as a challenge but rather fuel that keeps the fire burning.

HHR Blog: What advice do you have for people who want to break into the music or the Recording Arts Industry?

People love to put you down, they’ll tear you apart! You have to be ready for that. You have to BELIEVE in what your doing and KNOW you can be successful. Stay with it and never let anyone take away your dreams!
