An Atlanta corporate executive and self-called conservative is the latest candidate to announce a bid for U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson’s seat. Cory Ruth will announce his bid for Georgia’s Fourth Congressional District Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Library Coffee Company on Caldwell Road in Atlanta.

Ruth, 32, joins business consultant Liz Carter and retired naval officer Larry Gause on the Republican ticket. In addition to Johnson’s bid for a third term, DeKalb County Commissioner Connie Stokes and former DeKalb CEO Vernon Jones are running as Democrats.

Samantha Ruiz Cohen has announced her candidacy for Florida’s Miami-Dades Circuit Court. Samantha Ruiz Cohen offers over seventeen years of professional experience. She is a skilled criminal trial lawyer, a teacher of Constitutional Law, and a civil practitioner.

Samantha began her career in public service at the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, where she worked for over a decade. While there, she tried murder cases as a Division Chief and was the courtroom supervisor of felony level prosecutors. Moreover, she prosecuted tourist robbery cases and assisted other lawyers with case preparation as the Assistant Chief of the Career Criminal/Robbery Unit.

Tony Bouie is running as a Republican for a State Senate seat in Arizona. According to his website he grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. He comes from a home of two hardworking parents. Tony was encouraged to pursue excellence in athletics and academics by his parents who were the first in their families to receive both Undergraduate and Advanced degrees.Tony was one of the rare dual sport athletes in college which made for no off-season. He was a 4 year starter in football and a 2 year starter in baseball. He was a Pac-10 Champion in both sports. He was 1st Team All Pac-10 and a Consensus All American in football. He was also on the cover of Sports IllustratedView.

Tony holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Media Arts from the University of Arizona (1994), which he finished in only four years. He began pursuit of his first masters degree while still playing ball in college and completed it while playing in the NFL, a Masters of Arts in Literacy and Education from the University of Arizona (1997). After a prolific college career, Tony went un-drafted. He fought his way onto the Tampa Bay Buccaneer roster in the NFL after being cut the last week of training camp. His career lasted four years in Tampa.

Augustus Shaw is runnig for a seat in the Arizona House of Representative legislative District 17. He is a lifelong resident of Arizona and the founding attorney of Shaw & Lines, LLC, a local area Law Firm that employs 8 members of the Community. Augustus has been recognized as a leader in his practice area of Community Association Law. He was recognized by the Leadership Centre as their 2006 Lecturer of the Year.

He has also been appointed to the prestigious College of Community Association Lawyers, an organization that recognizes attorneys who have distinguished themselves through contributions to the evolution or practice of community association law and who have committed themselves to high standards of professional and ethical conduct in the practice of community association law

This week “National Public Radio” profiled Marvin Rogers an urban Republican who has been featured on HHR many times.

Marvin is the type of Republican that Jack Kemp would have been proud of here is a guy who is truly ‘on the ground” in urban areas spreading a genuine message of personal empowerment.

If the Republican Party is genuinely serious about an urban Republican emergence, it must reject recent moves to create a litmus test for all candidates. The damage such a test will have on inner-city and urban Republican candidates will be irreversible.

Any Republican who wants to run for office in an urban area must stand up and speak up now!

Looking at election data from this week’s statewide elections in New Jersey and Virginia, it seems that the loyalty of young voters may only have been to one man — Barack Obama — not a party or an ideology, presenting a real opportunity for the GOP despite calls of extinction after 2008.

As this election season hits high gear new faces are emerging to take there place in the Republican Party. One such person is former NFL Star Damon Dunn. Born in 1976 in Arlington, Texas to a 16-year old single mother, Damon Dunn grew up in dire poverty; living in a three-bedroom trailer with ten people. Damon grew up hunting and fishing as means to provide food, and wore Salvation Army clothes. From these humble beginnings, Damon learned the value – and the rewards of hard work, which he has demonstrated throughout his life.

While there numbers are small in comparison to Democrats there willingness to pursue public service is a testament to each individual. As someone who has worked on many minority Republican campaigns believe me such races can be the most grueling of sports.

War is hell. If you lost a limb or have become impaired in some manner as to lose your livelihood, the wages of war are even more tortuous. We send young men to do battle on our behalf teaching them to extinguish the flames of life from those pegged our enemies. We have not fully appreciated the likelihood that those who have taken a life are most at risk for the development of Post Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD’s) and violence when they return. We don’t want to talk about this side bar of battle.

If you are involved with politics, not only does your policy have to have an appeal, but so does your appearance. While I strongly believe that a politician’s attire has nothing to do with his stance on the issues, the public seems to focus on their attire.
