Obesity in America
by Doug Knickrehm
Look out! 86% of us will be overweight by 2030!
While apparently obesity is the burden of our entire nation, it shouldn’t be. Watch out for liberals to use this study, and their preconceived notions concerning our supposed inability as Americans to control and account for our actions to further regulate our daily lives. As we’ve already seen occur in California, so called enlightened liberals in the name of benevolence to our health have begun the process of regulating eating habits.
For pragmatic reasons I can understand why the government feels compelled to regulate our diets, and soon enough our exercise routines as well. When the government doles out billions in health care, those receiving the health care are at the mercy of the government with respect to their health. And if those receiving aide begin to have health problems due to obesity the extra cost should be on them, right?
With liberals this basic economic solution won’t fly. It will be the (supposedly) 14% healthy Americans who shoulder this weight. Not only will all taxpayers pay more, but (especially under the democrats socialist health care agenda) the government will regulate even more of every day activities for all Americans!
So, how do we combat this issue? First, if less people rely on government subsidy health care, the less reliant we are, and therefore the less power the Fed holds over us. John McCain offers a health care plan that is market based, and will hopefully initiate a move away from any government provided care. Secondly, using the free will given to us by God, solidified through the beautiful writings of our forefathers in the Constitution, more people need to choose to live healthy lives. We are not inept to handle our own business, especially our personal health. But, if we continue to lose the grip on eating an exercise it will only fuel the democrat argument to regulate the entire liberty of a nation to choose to eat a hot dog, opposed to a tofu dog.
Finally, if one is content with their lifestyle, disregard my call to get fit, we all have our habits, pleasures, etc…but if they need to be subsidized by taxpayers that infringes on the liberty of everyone else, and to be honest it’s selfish. I’m not saying put the six pack of beer down for water, personally someone’s weight matters very little. However, if your beer habit costs you an extra $400 bucks a month in medical costs, please pay on your own.
