Quote Of The Day

"As [President Robert] Mugabe's gang runs roughshod over the people of Zimbabwe, South Africa's political leaders legitimize his regime with attempts to 'mediate' (as if this were a conflict among equals). In contrast the Congress of South African Trade Unions has taken the lead in confronting tyranny in their neighboring country...first, their members refused to unload weapons that were shipped across South Africa for Mugabe's thugs; now, they are calling for grass-roots international resistance to his regime.

The COSATUs internationalist (or Pan-African, at least) legitimacy is burnished by their condemnation of the recent xenophobic attacks on migrant workers, and efforts to provide aid to these refugees. It will be interesting to see whether labor unions can establish a spirit of solidarity among southern Africans, and whether international grass-roots pressure can undermine the tyrants of the region."
