Welcome readers of US News & Word Report.

The other week US News and World Reporter contacted me asking to do an interview on African American Republicans. The interview was an inquiry into why this blog was supporting McCain while other black Republicans were changing there vote. The interviewee Nikki Schwab was very balanced and incredibly fair in her questions. We spoke for over an hour even though I was incredibly tired from helping a friend move. Here is the excerpt she placed in the article entitled -Some Black Republicans Torn About Voting for Obama or McCain
~Another "very likely" McCain vote, but a more moderate one, will come from Richard Ivory, founder of the blog HipHopRepublican. Ivory has a different view of the Republican Party, one that downplays the past and focuses on building the party up from a local level and bringing in urban African-American voters. "My blog was about starting a dialogue—basically get people to understand some Republican concepts from an urban perspective," Ivory says. And like Varner at Howard University, Ivory finds that some are miffed by his Republicanness and don't quite understand why he would support a "white old guy." But with the general election in full swing, he has found a good way to express his feelings: "I tell my friends, my heart is with Obama, and my brain is with McCain," Ivory says.
In honesty I am torn about the Democrats "the party of Andrew Jackson" potentially electing the first black president...I would prefer the party of Lincoln. The Democrats take credit for everything that has benefited black America despite there record of extreme racism. Very few people care or even know that the 1964 Civil Rights Act was passed only because Republicans fought Democrats to pass it.
The Democrats would like the world to believe that the many Republicans who fought for civil rights some dying trying to register blacks was just some anomaly.
want you to think these individuals never existed and there stories are dead forever. In some way an Obama win will only further the myth of the gallant Democrat against the oppressive Republicans. The failure of the Republican Party to fight back and tell its history is a sad story also.
In so many circles the Party of Lincoln started with William Buckely but in truth this party was founded for one main reason the abolition of slavery. Today it is a mixture of all sorts of groups from tax reformers to anti abortion advocates yet I think the history of this great party gets clouded at times. We must remember we were the party of Douglas and Lincoln and Roosevelt not just the party of Regan.
Some may take issue with me saying my heart is with Obama but do not be fooled, my heart us with his ability to despite his race rise and seek a historical victory and few can be upset with that. But after that one must consider his polices and his policies especially internationally if enacted would bring great harm to this nation.
Leaving Iraq may sound good in a fundraiser but Obama needs to at least understand that setting a time table would lead to chaos. Obama's ignoring the threats of the religious goals of Iran will leave Israel open up to attack. If Obama thinks Iraq is a mess what will he do if Iran launces a nuke at Israel? Will he prevent Iran from having a nuke or will he just "hope" they never get one. These are just a few of my problems with Sen.Obama nothing personal just the issues.

I am a Democrat but I support you guys..good luck!!
Why should the Republicans waste their time and money going after the Afro-American vote when 90% of them are already going for the Democratic canidate? There is an article on this very page which asks, in reference to Mugage's election, "When one canidate gets more than 90% of the vote, the election is fixed."
I like how you choose to look at what Conservatives did prior to Dwight E., but you must understand that blacks overwhelming prefer Dems because the issues they support are of relevance to them.
1. Iraq War - War that is proven to be over oil. All 5 of the major oil companies won uncontested contracts to refine oil in that region. Incidentally nearly all of them are American companies.
Claiming that leaving now will lead to instability to an area that already has/is unstable is weak bro. Dangling the threat of Iran is just using fear to govern. A timetable strategy is a good idea IMO because maybe some solutions will get done. Remember we pulled out of Vietnam and left the Korean war with ZERO consequences. Don't let the propaganda fool ya.
2. Economy - Conservative so-called tax cuts primarily benefit those who make the most. I mean 250K and up, which is something like 5%-15% of tax payers. For the rest of America, we'd pay more or alot more if your middle class. Don't even let me get started on gas.
4. Health care - Universal health care is working in "every" other 1st world country. Having it here would be a definite gain in the quality of life for most folks. I agree we do have the most advanced doctors and technology for medicine in the world. But ONLY THE VERY RICH CAN AFFORD THAT SORT OF TREATMENT. 1/3 of Americans don't even have health care. Do you want to guess how many of those people are black?
4. Education - Dems actually want to place some mandates on a standard of education. Rather than make it all parents responsibility to put there kids through school. Once again, something that is a luxury for the upper middle class and up, but not your average joe.
My point is that it's insulting to say that blacks are misinformed and only following blindly with the Liberals. Maybe most blacks are reacting to the major issues that affect them personally and like what the Liberals are saying. Maybe gun control, abortion issues, and same sex marriages are compromises they are willing to make in order to see some change in issues that affect there everyday life more profoundly.
Just my .2 cents
if your goal was to prove that Democrats as a whole were evil in the 1960s, you picked an awful example. You write as though the Democrats as a whole opposed the Civil Rights Act. The truth is that while Southern House Democrats (who, let's face it, weren't exactly the liberals often identified with the Democratic Party today, and instead were very conservative) opposed the act at 7 for and 87 against (that's 7% for), Southern Republicans went 0 for and 10 against (0%). (FYI: by "Southern" I mean those from Confederate states).
Now, if we look at northern Democrats in the house, it was 145 for, and 9 against, meaning that 94% were for the passage. Flip over to Northern Republicans, and it was 138 for and 24 against, or 85%.
In other words, your argument fails in the House.
Now, what about the Senate? Southern Democrat Senators went 1 for and 20 against (5% for), while the lone Southern Republican voted against (0% for). Now, if we look at northern Democrats, they went 45 for and 1 against, (98% for). Northern Republicans went 27 for and 5 against (84% for). In other words, Democrats as a whole supported the CRA at a greater rate (in terms of percentage), despite the fact that almost the entire South voted against it. Further, not a single Republican member of either the House or Senate voted for the CRA. Hmmm. . .do you have a better example?
First I am white, age 65 and a long time conservative. I agree with your article. It is true that the Republicans fail to realize that blacks needs need to be addressed. I guess I just always think of all of us as Americans and that my needs are the same as any other American. I have watched the southern Democrates play with the lives of southern blacks for 45 years. They promise them everything and deliver little that should counts. In the process the black family has had the family unit distroyed. When help was offered it often required the Father to leave the home so his family could get the help needed. And that is not all that was destroyed.
Most of all we all just want to be equal. To me that means in ever way. This is a deep subject but do not believe that the southern white Republicans are against the blacks. I can recall being call a radical in the 60's when Windrop Rockafellow ran for Gov. of Arkansas and I worked for him. My mind has wondered a bit. but there is so much that could be said on this subject. God bless us all.
"The failure of the Republican Party to fight back and tell its history is a sad story also."
You have spoken the plain truth.
....."In honesty I am torn about the Democrats "the party of Andrew Jackson" potentially electing the first black president...I would prefer the party of Lincoln."
Honestly? Are you really torn? Because it sound's like bullshit.
You really think that if JFK, FDR, RFK, Carter, Gore, Kerry, etc. we're in office at that time they'd be fighting to maintain the policies of legalized slavery at that time? And people like Cheyney, Bush, Strom Thurman, David Duke, Trent Lott would be fighting to end this type of oppression? After all, they're "the party of Lincoln."
And again, about you being so "torn" to vote for the party of Jackson, Obama is a f***ing black man, do you fear he's going to enslave himeself?
"Anonymous" a few comments above gets the issues wrong though is faithful to the modern liberal spin on issues.
1. Vouchers would help the poor to migrate from horrible public schools into current and yet to be created private schools that will all compete for the education dollars coming directly from parents.
2. If the Sudan is any indication, Islamists are certainly not only focused on killing whites and Jews.
3. The tax cuts and other free market items will increase employment opportunities for minorities. Remember, every minimum wage hike above the productivity value, every union closed shop law, leads to higher minority unemployment.
4. Universal healthcare leads to lower medical standards and longer waiting periods before accessing the medical procedure with many patients dying before being treated. Why do so many Canadians cross the border for their medical treatment?
Yes, Anonymous, you can restate the Liberal cant. Read Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams and other economists. If you do not, then keep on with the failed policies of the Left.
