Black Republican 08" -Dr. Marion D. Thorpe

Every election year this blog highlights minority candidates who are running for office as Republicans and this year is no exception. The first campaign comes to us from the state of Florida where a qualified African-American Republican is running for Congressional District 23 on November 4, 2008.
The candidate is a father a medical doctor and is running on such topics as education reform, economic empowerment and community development.
The Congressional District 23 (FL) he is running in has more square footage than Rhode Island and includes the following five counties: Palm Beach, Broward, Hendry, St. Lucie, Martin. The present and former bastions of sugar production such as Belle Glade, Clewiston, Pahokee, and South Bay are in this district as well as the more urban areas of West Palm Beach, and Delray Beach.
By and large, the people who live and work in this district are perpetually subjected to diminishing job opportunities, a sub-par educational system, sub-standard Health Care, increasing crime, and a general sense of bleakness. Categorically, the people of Florida’s 23rd Congressional District are much less concerned with Party labels and national politics; but rather, they are looking for a good, honest person who can deliver them from their present ills. The Thorpe ‘08 candidacy represents the dawning of a new day throughout Florida’s 23rd Congressional District.

Over the past year, I have had the great opportunity of getting to know Dr. Thorpe quite well, and I honestly believe he is among this country's most exceptional candidates for Congress in 2008, both in terms of his extraordinary private and public sector credentials and also his thoughtful policy agenda for both our nation and his Florida district.
As your excellent article correctly notes, Dr. Thorpe is a medical doctor. He also had extensive governmental experience in health care, including the increasingly important and complex areas of public health, Medicare and Medicaid, which will likely represent one of the greatest policy challenges to this nation in the years to come.
As a health care executive and professional myself, I have come to greatly value Dr. Thorpe's clinical and policy insights on our health care systems and his thoughtful solutions to ensure that all Americans are afforded access to quality health care. On day one, I have no doubt that Dr. Thorpe will arrive in Congress in January 2009 as one of the body's most seasoned health care experts.
Dr. Thorpe also well understands the critical nature of this moment in our nation's history. He properly supports the global war on terror and doing what is necessary to win this war so that our nation may live in peace and freedom. He also understands the dynamics of free market economies and how government too often has suffocated entrepreneurship and economic growth with overregulation, excessive taxation and reckless spending.
While it's true that there may be too much negativity in American politics, it's also true that Dr. Thorpe is doing this nation the great favor of challenging one of the most disgraced existing Members of Congress, Alcee Hastings, who as a federal judge was impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives in a nearly unanimous vote and then was convicted by the U.S. Senate for accepting a $150,000 bribe from criminal defendants who were facing 21 counts of racketeering in a case over which Hastings was preciding. Hastings was appropriately removed from the federal bench by the Senate. I think we all can agree that Florida's 23rd Congressional District can do better than this.
Dr. Thorpe far and away represents that better choice, and it's my hope that this fact becomes widely recognized in the year to come and that Dr. Thorpe is afforded the opportunity he deserves to offer this nation all of his obvious skills, talents and commitment. I know he will serve this nation with great distinction.

I met Dr. Thorpe innocently and in a totally voluntary exchange like to men would have waiting on the light to change. I am not in his district but I say to you who are, don’t miss this opportunity to put an uncorrupted, truly open and compassionate man in office. I truly believe Dr. Thorpe to be an honest hard working man. We had several communications back and forth before I was aware of any political aspirations on his part. I cant express enough for all you folks who live in the area this man will serve, if you will look closely at this man, you WILL vote for him. I'm on the road a lot as a musician and you learn to read folks character. You can talk to me till you turn green, I'm listening to your heart, and I'm convinced that in political leadership, we need Dr. Thorpe and many more like him.
God bless you my friend,
Steve
