This technology might make a big difference. My readings on this topic reveals that most "black" people will find that they have at least 20% European genetic composition (with many finding that they have more than 50%!), and some very big fraction of whites (I forget the figure) will find that they have 10% or more African genetic composition. One implication: this will permit lots of "white" folks to check the "African-American" box on their Stanford applications!
Another finding, which is non-serious but quite amusing to me: nearly all black folks claim that they "have Indian" in them. These tests show that only about 20% of black folks do.
Also: these tests show that "black" Americans trace their African genetic material to particular regions, and that they do not have any genetic material deriving from the peoples of Egypt or the other famous African empires, such as the Zulus. Thus "black" and "white" Americans have the same relationships to these empires that they do the Chinese, Arab, and Indian empires: no genetic lineage, but rather the only one that counts, common membership to the human race. Combine this with the revelation that "black" americans tend to have a large fraction of various European genetic material, and if black folks want to celebrate the "great civilizations" from which their genetic material hails, and they will have to trade Egyptian pyramids for Hungarian castles!
Imagine Maya Angelou having to admit that it's not the "Nile River" that flows through her blood, but rather the Rhine!
These tests will give new meaning to Frankie Beverly's song, "We Are One." We really are!
