American Idol Or Minstrel?

Idol Or Minstrel?

Sherrilyn Ifill over at BlackProf.com discusses Taylor Hicks, who is one of tonight's finalists in the "American Idol" series finale. The liberal professor argues that having successfully purged all blacks from the final three weeks of the competition - unprecedented in the show's brief history - fans of American Idol can sit back tonight and possibly watch a white minstrel performer walk away with the title:

"But this injustice is nothing compared to the atrocity of giving the Idol win to Taylor Hicks. From his first audition, Travis was a lounge act, 'an impersonator.' It was an old, but cute gimmick – white guy with a big voice impersonates Ray Charles, complete with twitchy body movements. This was not blue-eyed soul – talented white performers engaging powerfully and compellingly with black soul music. This was minstrelry. Simon laughed at Taylor’s audition, but the guy had a voice and seemed so kooky I’m sure the judges thought he’d be good for some on-air and behind-the-scenes hijinks that would boost ratings. So they sent him to Hollywood.

That Taylor appears a little long in the tooth because of premature gray hair, and is the kind of goofy doofus we all recognize from high school, would normally have doomed his chances. But Taylor has a voice. What he doesn’t have is an iota of honest connection with anything he’s singing. He’s impersonating all the time – mostly Ray Charles, but sometimes Otis Redding, sometimes Joe Cocker. There’s nothing about this guy that suggests he 'gets' what he’s singing. And this may sound cruel, but anybody who's watched this guy scream 'Soul Patrol, Soul Patrol!' (the name he’s given his fans) after a performance, and hasn’t thought that something’s not quite right with this boy, is kidding themselves."

Below is Taylor's Final Performance.....Despite what this moonbat said

Taylor Hicks is the Sould Perol!!!!
